Style is a state of mind and fashion a means of expression, which is all the more important in our rapidly changing world. We check in with Anna Kemper for some words of wisdom.
My big news is… Anna Kemper Atelier is now open at Union Market District, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. I certainly didn’t expect to open my home decor store and interior design studio in such tumultuous times, but here we are, and I’m ready to begin this exciting new chapter!
My hope for the future is… to immerse myself in the incredible art and design community in DC.
My outlook has shifted by… the reminder to continue to be open to endless and unexpected possibilities. I never would have thought that midlife I would make a solo move and face the things we typically associate with early adulthood: making new friends and connections in the business community, learning to navigate a new city, and discovering my place in and the ways I can contribute to my community. Breaking out of the comfort zone is what makes for a richer life experience.
In 2020, style is all about… the notions of peace, comfort and refuge. This shift is very in line with my aesthetic, which is always imbued with plush textures, comfort that doesn’t sacrifice functionality, soothing color palettes and organic materials and shapes that inherently connect people to their environments. I am supporting my local community by… hosting a rotating gallery that will include the works of DC-based artists, and ultimately I would like to tie in this work with a philanthropic mission.
Designers I love to support are… my Union Market District neighbor Mallory of SHELTER. I’m inspired by so many designers here and abroad such as John Saladino, Kelly Wearstler and French designer Jean Louis Deniot
For me, 2020 has brought... perspective with a capital P. I try not to take myself or minor setbacks too seriously when there are clearly larger concerns in today’s environment. And 2020 continues to be a year of big change. Along with returning to DC to start my small business and my son recently getting engaged, I’m also nurturing a long-distance relationship with my husband and making new friends and business connections.
