Step into the playful, dream-like, hypnotic world of Whimsy at The St. Regis as they fuse art with worldly flavors, vibe-worthy music and more than ample amounts of Instagrammable moments.
“Each course coincides with a change in the room’s design, taking our guests from the treetops to outer space. It was important for us that the composition of the dishes reflected these environments, but that the food also felt as playful and fun as the room itself,” says executive chef Andrew Roche.
The entire room, including your table and place setting, are enveloped in projections constantly, ensuring the experience is immersive and distractions from the outside world simply melt away. Fairies “fly” around the room, guests bang on the table to “break the ice”, and a ton of other themed surprises. An animated character, along with a human moderator, guide you through the experience, which really makes it feel like you are in a Disney movie.
In addition, each dish is served with a coordinating presentation. A quail egg with truffle scented asparagus flan and smoked Muscovy duck breast arrives at the table in a faux egg and bird’s nest as the table transforms into a tree, in the second course, for example.
“In designing the dishes, we aimed to elevate the visual experience by adding layers to the sensory experience. You eat first with your eyes, but the smell, the taste, the tactile elements of how you eat each dish are equally important to us. We hope that each dinner is taken on a journey as we move from course to course,” says Roche.
The menu features five prix fixe courses using delicacies like beef filet mignon, foie gras and royal caviar, along with a literal ferris wheel of side dishes.
Whimsy first held successful residencies in Doha, Qatar and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia before its debut in the US at The St. Regis.
“The Whimsy experience was first brought to life in the Asian market; however we created an entirely new menu for its US debut here in Washington, DC. We drew on classic fine dining dishes with entirely unexpected presentations that live up to the Whimsy concept,” says Roche.
