Don your nautical apparel for your next visit to Thompson Washington DC’s Navy Yard. Hailed as the first lifestyle hotel in the ever-evolving Navy Yard neighborhood, the hotel’s newly opened signature restaurant, Surveyor, is fabulously nautical and accompanied by a Southern-inspired menu from acclaimed executive chef Brian Hatfield.
The new restaurant officially opened in September and serves breakfast and dinner. From its name to its decor and menu items, the restaurant honors the rich nautical history of Navy Yard.
“A marine surveyor is the person who examines and certifies a ship for voyage, much like a chef in their kitchen,” according to the hotel’s press release.
Hatfield has been a force in the DMV and national restaurant scene for a while now. Previous to his role at Surveyor, he managed a variety of restaurant groups, including Founding Farmers Restaurant Group, Restaurants Unlimited, and Hillstone Restaurant Group.
Surveyor boasts a supper club vibe, encouraging guests to mingle and socialize over creative cuisine. As an homage to the area’s shipbuilding past, each cocktail at Surveyor is named after nautical knots.
The menu is loaded with high-quality American comfort food that has a Southern flair. Find cornbread, deviled eggs, spinach artichoke dip with goat cheese and garlic bread, and slow roasted meatballs on the appetizer menu. For entrees, check out the New Orleans BBQ shrimp, the 8-ounce filet with bone marrow Demi, crab cakes with remoulade sauce, and pan-seared salmon with charred shallot vinaigrette. Vegetarians will be excited to find a delicious mushroom stroganoff with a brandy cream sauce on the menu, adapted from chef Hatfield’s grandmother’s recipe.

Thompson Washington DC is also home to the Thompson Bar Room and The Rooftop at the Thompson. The rooftop bar is a particularly luxurious feature at this hotel, because it has 360-degree views of Navy Yard, Nationals Park included.
True to the venue’s theme, each drink at The Rooftop is named after parts of a ship. Perhaps the most popular cocktail at this lavish rooftop is the Starboard Spritz, made with Tito’s vodka, green chartreuse charred thyme, strawberry, and sparkling wine. The drink is also tied to a giveback initiative from Tito’s Vodka that will donate $1 to Give The Kids The World through the end of 2022. Other cocktails include the Bimini, Know The Ropes, and No Room To Swing A Cat.
