Peggy Sparks, one of DC’s most influential gallery owners and consultants (Artist’s Proof), never hesitated to collaborate with the minds behind the newly renovated W Hotel. “There’s something genuine and relatable about street art because of the nature of the medium,” says Sparks. “When you’re painting on walls in alleys, you have to interact with your environment—the spaces and the people. It’s different from most other forms of visual art, where you’re often secluded.” The W recently underwent a $50 million renovation and reopened its sleek Living Room, a perfect spot for cocktails (yes, with bottle service), conversation and outrageously hip events. So, when it came time to populate its walls with art, the exhibit for the grand reopening set a tone ripe with innovation. W.O.A. (works of art) introduces W’s patrons to the Mount Rushmore of DC’sgraffiti muralists: Kelly Towles, Decoy, CreativeJunkFood and Gaia. Each of these artists has helped define the District’s street-art scene, and their pieces showcase a personal connection to the city. “Since the 1960s, murals have been vital in celebrating the District’s music, identity and experiences,” says Sparks. “With the exhibition at the W, we’ve been able to tell their stories and celebrate an art form that has always been an integral part of Washington.” Through Jan. 1, 515 15th St. NW, marriot.com
