Lauryn Hill headlines the BGR! at The Kennedy Center, with shows March 5 and 6.
It’s tough to say what warms our musical hearts more: Lauryn Hill appearing at The Kennedy Center or the latter hosting a BGR! (Black Girls Rock!) fest in the first place. We’ll call it a sublime draw and one of the biggest reasons to celebrate hip-hop this month. Now in its second year, the festival is a three-day, immersive celebration of black women’s contributions to the arts. In addition to workshops, discussions and free community events, the fest’s twin peaks are shows headlined by Hill and Alice Smith. Hill says her music is “more a product of my heart, soul and experience gained through doing, rather than something I was taught in a formal school setting. Not much different from the genre of hip-hop itself.” Bring it, Ms. Hill. March 5-7
