Collectors are taking note of Sara Diani’s (@saradianiart) work as she opens a new exhibit on Feb. 1 at Station 3510 (station3510.com), a dynamic space curated by DC creative Jarrett Hendrix. DC artist Sara Diani, whose exhibit opens at Station 3510 this month, shows work that reflects on identity.
What’s the best artistic advice you have ever followed? American art critic Jerry Saltz once said, ‘Just work hard and make an enemy out of envy.’
What’s the central theme of your upcoming exhibition? It’s an exaggerated and poetic portrayal of my essence, navigating the complexities of displacement through escapism and self-expression.
Does your work engage with any cultural themes? My work reflects my Afghan-American identity and the tension of a confusing upbringing, navigating between traditional values and Western influences. This is expressed through layered compositions and symbolic contrasts.
Who or what serves as your muse? I am my own muse, reflecting my journey of identity, sensuality and self-discovery.
What are your favorite galleries and events? I love the National Gallery of Art (nga.gov). Chela Mitchell Gallery (@chelmitchellart) is another favorite, with its intentional curation and space for brilliant artistic minds. I hope to attend the Frieze Art Fair (frieze.co) in L.A., as I’m always excited to explore work worldwide.
What is your mantra? Don’t manage time; manage focus.
What advice would you give our 20-year-old self? Set boundaries unapologetically.
