A Rockville couple builds a custom home inspired by travel and family time.
Cooper’s team designed a white oak ceiling in the family room.
THE PROJECT
Tearing down a home and starting fresh is exciting—and challenging. Critical decisions come into play almost daily. What will the home’s new aesthetic capture? How will each room flow? How should the house marry form and function with the suitable materials? These were the questions on the minds of a couple with two children (one in high school and one in elementary) in Rockville when considering the rebuilding of their 8,200-squarefoot home off Georgetown Pike.

THE TEAM
The couple selected the team from Art & Design Partners (artdesignpartners.com), led by its principal and lead designer, Elizabeth Spratt Cooper, to tackle the home’s interiors.
The design team from Art & Design Partners layered in abundant textures throughout the home.
“Our goal is always to help clients develop their style to the fullest,” says Cooper, adding that her Rockville clients wanted a modern look with clean lines and an open and airy feel throughout the home. “Their request also called for an approachable and inviting family home. To achieve an inviting, modern appeal, we layered natural materials and textures that would remind them of time spent in Fiji. It all meshes together to create an open concept space that feels inviting and cozy.”
THE PROCESS
Cooper and her team met the family while the foundation for their new home was being poured and worked with them for two years. “We had a hand in designing every part of the home, including the facade materials, window placements and treatment, tile selections, plumbing fi xtures and placements, decor, carpentry built-ins and closet design builds,” she says.
“The husband and wife were truly a team!” says Cooper. “They joined each weekly meeting, whether on Zoom, in showrooms, in their former home or walking the job site. We organized the selection process and helped the clients realize their vision.”

FAMILY ROOM
The design team incorporated white oak in many rooms to balance the soft white paint used throughout the home. Cooper’s team designed a white oak ceiling in the family room with coordinating floating built-ins. “We layered texture and warmth through the ceiling treatment, the custom textured paint finish on the fireplace and the upholstery in a palette of soft tones and patterns,” says Cooper, whose team added upholstery from Lee Industries (leeindustries.com) and Stewart Furniture (stewartfurniture.com), window coverings from Hartmann & Forbes (hartmannforbes.com) and a family gallery wall from Frame Avenue Design (frameavenuedesign.com).

KITCHEN
“We worked with Aidan Design (aidandesign.com) to [create] a custom kosher kitchen for our clients,” says Cooper. “We brought in the white oak again on the island and chose a custom color for the surround cabinets. The refrigerator-freezer wall and butler’s pantry cabinetry are fi nished in a third color to provide a strong contrast and interest.”
Cooper says there are no pendants over the island to maintain the clean and open aesthetic. “We opted for an interesting light over the window sink and a chandelier from Visual Comfort (visualcomfort.com) over the kitchen table,” she says. Notable pieces in the home’s hub include custom art by Thom Flynn (@thomflynn), hardware from Push + Pull (pushpullhardware.com), counter stools from Room & Board (roomandboard.com), a table from Arhaus (arhaus.com) and chairs from Calligaris (calligaris.com). Faucets and sinks come from Ferguson (fergusonshowrooms.com).

PRIMARY SUITE
The couple wanted a dreamy sanctuary that reminded them of travel. “We set the scene with natural grasscloth wallpaper from Maya Romanoff (mayaromanoff.com), white oak accents and lots of neutral textures and patterns for a lush and enveloping feeling—but never cloying,” says Cooper, who used upholstery from Kravet (kravet.com) and Amerian Leather (americanleather.com).

Adding to the room’s appeal are lighting from Made Goods (madegoods.com), Arteriors (arteriors.com) and Visual Comfort, and artwork from Maura Segal (maurasegal.com) via Julie Nester Gallery (julienestergallery.com).

The primary bath boasts a dual vanity designed by Cooper’s team. The vanity, lights and custom mirrors are layered on a three-dimensional textured tiled wall. Other features include a towel warmer, rain shower and floating bench. Standout pieces include lighting from Visual Comfort and fixtures from Kohler (kohler.com) and Moen (moen.com).

HOW THE HOME IS LIVING
Cooper recently ran into the clients and mentioned that she missed seeing them regularly.
The family benefits from a mini kitchen, complete with high-end appliances
“The wife’s response was, ‘I don’t think there’s a day that we don’t think about you when we’re walking around our house!’ They love hosting family and friends because the house can easily accommodate large and small groups. It warms our hearts to know that the spaces we designed for them were flexible for their growing family needs.”
The new Rockville home measures 8,200 square feet.
