Peter Chang, the founder cultural powerhouse USAN USAN (@usanusan_), talks about everything from the local creative scene to his mantra. Peter Chang is also the creator of DC’s Umbrella Art Festival.
What was your original muse as a muralist?
Cyrcle (@cyrcle)—they reminded me of what I wanted to do when I started my art career. It wasn’t all about murals; it was about creating.
What do you think would surprise people most about you?
People think I’m serious and all business. In reality, I’m a goofy guy. They’re surprised by my sense of humor.
What is on the horizon for USAN USAN?
I’m bringing back the Redeye Night Market (@redeyenightmarket), an Asian-inspired street festival that brings together more than 50 local vendors to showcase an array of food and beverage offerings—like what you would find in a night market abroad. I’m most excited to train our newest employee, our newborn son Camden Yong Chang!
Cita Sadeli (Miss Chelove, @misschelove) is always grinding and putting up great work around the city. Another artist whose work I enjoy is Sara Diani (@saradianiart). Yes, talent is important, but you also need drive. She has that and more. She’s a school teacher and very family-oriented, and the discourse of her work is deep.
What is your mantra?
When there is any doubt, there is no doubt—which means always trust your gut.
