AMA Southeast DC welcomes the new Northern Italian concept, Ama, a few blocks from Navy Yard. DC hospitality veterans Johanna Hellrigl (Doi Moi, Proof, Mercy Me) and Micah Wilder (Chaplin’s, Zeppelin) created the all-day dining venue. Morning fare includes freshly baked cornetto (Italian croissant) accompanied by Caffè Vergnano espresso. The daytime menu features savory dishes like classic focaccia Genovese sandwiches and seasonal salads. For dinner, look for crispy focaccia di formaggio of Hellrigi’s childhood, topped with tangy crescenza cheese in homage to the renowned Manuelina in Recco, Italy. This summer, the menu showcases Ligurian seafood and coastal flavors. This fall, the culinary team will offer the hearty comfort food of Alto Adige (think items like polenta and Italian salumi). 885 New Jersey Ave. SE, @amarestaurant.bar
Diakaya Izakaya now offers sushi, as it keeps things authentic with current Japanese pub culture
DAIKAYA IZAKAYA Japan’s izakayas typically serve pub fare and snacks but have recently begun dishing sushi. Trying to keep things authentic in DC, the kitchen crew at Daikaya—encouraged by pleas from its loyal fans—is following the trend. The restaurant’s longtime chef, Toyoaki “Kita” Kitamura, trained in the art of sushi-making in Japan and brings his skills to the kitchen. The menu will feature classic dishes and some inventive twists, including a salmon maki roll with sesame, mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes and shiso leaves, and a spicy tuna maki roll with Saikyo white miso, togarashi puree and spicy mayo. Bonus: The restaurant revealed a new sake menu with next-generation sakes crafted with plum wine and spicy peach. Guests also can expect matcha sake in the coming weeks. 705 Sixth St. NW,202.589.1600, daikaya.com
