The Mission
For this full home renovation and addition, our clients wanted to breathe fresh life into their Lyon Village home while honoring its classic 1930s charm, maximizing space and functionality along the way. Our clients didn’t want the cookie-cutter look a lot of additions have today, so we worked carefully with them to craft a fresh take on tradition. We incorporated an exciting mix of Art Deco and colonial design, drawing inspiration from Sarah Susanka’s “Not So Big” concept.
The Challenge
This project was a structural feat. In order to achieve the open floor plan our clients had in mind, we had to extend brick exterior walls and rework the interior, relying on steel beams to hold the house in place. Structurally speaking, it would have been easier to tear the house down and start from scratch. However, we’re extremely happy with how this turned out, and more importantly, our clients are thrilled to have honored the original build.
The Pivot
Aligning the main-level fireplace with the second-floor master bedroom fireplace posed a challenge. After consulting with our clients, we framed the fireplace with a half-moon overhang to conceal the bulkhead. This unexpected detail sparked an arch motif that we wove throughout the home—from arched entryways to the range hood, creating a functional yet cohesive Art Deco design. Another major win during the design process was deciding to fabricate custom cabinetry in-house for the master closet. The clients loved this so much that we extended the custom cabinetry to the butler’s pantry and powder rooms.
The Victory
The greatest win of this project was turning our clients’ vision into reality. They wanted a showstopping, functional master closet, and we delivered—from custom high-reaching cabinetry with ladder access to an embedded speaker system. Not only was this project a rewarding experience, but it was also an embodiment of our company’s core tenets: communication, collaboration, and craftsmanship. We are so grateful to have worked with clients with such a keen eye for design and willingness to get creative along the way. The result is an elegant and expertly crafted space that exudes tradition and taste.
