Ed Ball Landscape Architecture is an Oak Hill-based luxury landscape and construction company that serves the greater Northern Virginia region. Led by industry veteran Ed Ball, the company specializes in stunning outdoor living spaces, including everything from custom firepits, outdoor kitchens, and epic entertainment areas to serene garden escapes and in-ground hot tubs, spas, and pools. EBLA makes it their mission to perfectly mesh aesthetic dreams with functional design. From conception to execution, the team works to ensure the outcome is nothing short of excellent, which is illustrated in the project-based Q&A, below.

Question 1: What was your client’s vision for their outdoor oasis?

The client wanted to create a small, intimate pool area for their family to enjoy. To accomplish this, EBLA needed to find an area that could accommodate the build. Sandwiched between the septic field and septic main line on the side of the house was the most logical and cost-efficient location.

Question 2: What inspired you when designing this pool?

Our design team set out to create a clean-lined, private space with a preexisting deck on one side and a neighbor on the other. Our main goal was to ensure that the pool felt like a relaxing escape despite the logistical challenges of the space.

Question 3: How did you address the inevitable challenges that arose during the build?

The biggest hurdle of this build was the property itself. Our team came up with a design that moved the septic line to accommodate setbacks required for county permitting. We also managed to build a retaining wall under the preexisting deck without disturbing the structure itself in order to create more room for concrete pavers surrounding the pool.

Question 4: What characteristics of this build stand out?

As you walk up to the home, you would never guess that there is a pool at the end of the driveway. I love how the space between the garage and the pool is clearly defined by steeds hollies; yet, when in the pool space, you don’t feel like cars are on top of you.

Question 5: What maintenance considerations should homeowners be aware of for this type of design?

Clients often forget about the ongoing maintenance pools require. Most hire a pool company to service the pool weekly but that may not be an option for everyone. Ultimately, any outdoor living space—not just pools—will require some level of maintenance. The EBLA team works with our clients to minimize maintenance as much as possible in order to fit their lifestyle.

Question 6: Beyond pools, what landscape architecture trends are you most excited for in 2024?

We continue to explore outdoor entertaining by extending our indoor spaces outdoors and vice versa. I always look forward to seeing where a client wants to take their vision of this concept. Every project is exciting for me because it's an individualized process. Our client's personal aesthetic, property details, and their family's needs inspire us to create the outdoor living space of their dreams.
