Grand, opulent and sophisticated are a few words that may come to mind when envisioning the downtown DC institution that is the Hamilton Hotel. This fall, the historic hotel celebrates its 100th anniversary of serving the city’s elite.
What once started as a private school in 1851 was later founded as the Hamilton Hotel in 1922. The property was reconfigured and expanded to have 11 floors and 300 guest rooms, designed by architect Jules Henri de Sibour. The hotel hosted numerous significant historical moments, including serving as former President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s war room during World War II, and hosting one of his inaugural balls.

With its convenient location to DC hotspots, the hotel drew guests and visiting entertainers, which has inevitably helped the hotel to prosper for decades. Today, the hotel is part of the National Register of Historic Places, a unique distinction for structures with undeniable historical significance.
“Hamilton Hotel is honored to have reached this milestone, serving as a landmark and gathering space for the DC community for over 100 years,” says Mark Driscoll, regional managing director at Hamilton Hotel.
To celebrate its centennial anniversary, Hamilton Hotel is hosting a slew of November events that locals and tourists alike need to experience.
The hotel has partnered with former White House executive pastry chef, Bill Yosses, for a Centennial Confectior residency. While Yosses fed and worked with the Obamas in the White House from 2007 to 2014, he developed an independent fondness for the nearby Hamilton Hotel. During his time at the White House, he was dubbed “the Crust Master” by former President Barack Obama because of his glorious pies. He also collaborated with Michelle Obama to create educational programs surrounding her bountiful garden.
“By collaborating with Bill Yosses, we can offer hotel guests and locals an exclusive series of tailored, feel-good experiences to celebrate the centennial and our shared love for DC. We look forward to continuing to commemorate the hotel’s storied past while paving the way for the next 100 years of hospitality and culture in DC,” says Driscoll.
Yosses will craft specialty baked goods and host unique culinary experiences for guests and locals throughout November and December.
On Tuesday, Nov. 1, Yosses will create a 100th-anniversary inspired cookie that guests will receive upon turndown service in their rooms that evening. Then, on Thursday, Dec. 8 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Yosses will lead a baking class at Hamilton Hotel. Guests will get to learn baking techniques from Yosses and have the opportunity for Yosses to sign copies of his latest book, The Sweet Spot: Dialing Back Sugar and Amping Up Flavor.
On Dec. 12 to 16, Hamilton Hotel will host its annual hot cocoa table, but this year with the accompaniment of tasty treats crafted by Yosses. In addition, Yosses will educate guests about the history of chocolate and how bitter cacao beans are processed to become classic chocolate, with plenty of sweet treats along the way.
Hamilton Hotel will offer a few special rates for guests who join the hotel on the day of its centennial anniversary as part of its Centennial Celebration Package. On Thursday, Nov. 17, the first ten bookings will be charged a nightly rate of just $19.22, and the next 20 bookings will be charged a nightly rate of just $100. Guests will receive complimentary birthday cake martinis from Via Sophia and a glass of bubbly upon arrival.
The hotel is rolling out all the stops to honor its momentous anniversary. To kick off the months of celebrations, the hotel hosted a dinner of DC’s female changemakers led by Glamour Editor in Chief Samantha Barry on Tuesday, Oct. 11. Supermodel and founder of Every Mother Counts, Christy Turlington Burns used the night to showcase her new documentary, Giving Birth In America and discuss, with Barry, the ongoing national conversation surrounding maternal health and passing federal paid leave into law.
