GMU’s School of Dance and dancer takes the spotlight during its annual gala this month.
There’s a beautiful little secret out in Fairfax. Each March, the George Mason University School of Dance hosts an evening honoring the artistry, discipline and dedication of its students and faculty. Led by Director Susan Shields, who I’ve written about in this magazine before, and co-chaired by Kimberly K. Eby and Julia G. Morelli, this annual pre-performance event honors those who support student scholarships—an investment in the future of dance.
Perhaps the most engaging part of the evening is a behind-the-scenes look into the heart of the School of Dance, where open studio demonstrations provide a rare glimpse into the creative process. Faculty and students offer insights into the techniques and inspirations behind their work, showcasing pieces by leading choreographers. These intimate moments reveal the precision and passion required to master the art form, leaving attendees with a deeper appreciation for the craft.
The evening continues with a reception featuring hors d’oeuvres, wine and desserts. This event fosters conversations between supporters, faculty and the talented students whose futures they help shape. It is a chance to connect, share in the excitement and celebrate the impact of scholarships on the next generation of professional dancers, choreographers and educators.

The night’s highlight is the Dance Gala Concert at the Center for the Arts, the season’s most anticipated performance. This year, the program features works by world-renowned choreographers Robert Battle, Robyn Mineko Williams Yue Yin and Christopher d’Amboise—performed by Mason’s exceptional dancers. Their artistry and technical prowess on stage testify to the power of mentorship and community support.
GMU’s School of Dance performs during the annual gala on March 29 and includes dancer Nifa Omondi.
Through sponsorships and donations, this event ensures that Mason dancers continue to thrive. More than a performance, it’s a celebration of movement and expression. It’s also the perfect way to usher in the promise of spring.
