A Maryland family redesigns their home with a modern aesthetic in mind. The family room combines elegance and comfort by using creamy whites and soft neutral.
THE PROJECT
A couple with two teenage daughters owns a 5,500-square-foot home in Ruxton, Md., located in Baltimore County. They loved the Cape Cod’s bones but realized everything felt dated except the kitchen, which had been renovated a few years ago. The couple’s style also evolved over the years, so their furniture no longer matched a newly realized aesthetic that leaned toward upscale Hamptons.
THE TEAM
Genevieve Webb and Ashley Mutch, principals and designers at Feather Hill Interiors (featherhillinteriors.com), became the driving forces behind the home’s renovation and reimagining. “Our designs are sophisticated, effortless and organic,” says Webb. “We focus on creating spaces that seamlessly blend beauty and functionality.”
Webb notes that her team’s approach to luxury reflects real life. They combine elegant elements with practical solutions to ensure each space is visually stunning and highly livable. “We emphasize natural materials and textures, fostering a connection between the indoors and outdoors to create an atmosphere that feels both refined and welcoming,” she says.
THE GOALS
“The clients wanted to update the house to make it feel fresh and modern while increasing the natural light,” says Webb. “We approached these goals by using lighter colors and contemporary furnishings and strategically placing reflective surfaces to enhance natural light.”
The Feather Hill Interiors team updated window treatments and cleared some exterior shrubbery to bring more natural light into the home, transforming it into a brighter, more welcoming space. This included adding millwork for character, replacing hardwood with natural white oak and upgrading recessed lighting with smaller, well-placed fixtures. With teenage daughters and two dogs in mind, the designers chose performance fabrics and durable rugs to balance beauty with practicality.
The sunroom offers a lovely retreat with custom lounge chairs and coffee tables from Palaecek and custom sofas from Bernhardt.
LIVING & FAMILY ROOMS
“For the formal living room, our goal was to create a sophisticated and inviting space,” says Webb, who added a custom, temperature-controlled wine cellar and a bar area with a Calacatta slab. “The built-in shelves and curated decor add personality, while the statement light fixture and large artwork serve as focal points, enhancing the room’s overall aesthetic.” The room features a custom upholstered daybed from Dmitriy & Co. (dmitriyco. com), a chandelier from Palacek (palacek.com), a custom cocktail table from Baker Furniture (bakerfurniture.com) and custom lounge chairs from Interlude Home (interludehome.com). A custom rug from Stark Carpet (starkcarpet.com) lines the room.
Webb and Mutch combined elegance and comfort in the family room by using creamy whites and soft neutrals. Standout pieces include custom sofas from Lee Industries (leeindustries.com), ottomans from Interlude Homes, throws from Auskin (fibrebyauskin.com), accessories from Arteriors (arteriorshome.com) and custom-cut rugs from Sacco Carpet (saccocarpet.com).
The dining room shines with a custom-built table from Viesso, original artwork from Tappan Collective and lighting from Visual Comfort.
DINING ROOM
The design team commissioned Viesso (viesso.com) to custom-build a table accommodating up to 12 people. Webb and Mutch also incorporated clean lines and a neutral palette, complemented by original artwork from Tappan Collective (tappancollective.com). “The lighting fixture from Visual Comfort (visualcomfort.com) adds a modern touch, while the comfortable yet stylish chairs ensure the space is both practical for large gatherings and visually appealing,” says Webb, whose team added dining chairs from Four Hands (fourhands.com), a floor mirror from RH (rh.com) and a custom rug from Sacco Carpets.

KITCHEN BREAKFAST ROOM
Since the kitchen was renovated previously, Webb says her team aimed for a cozy, functional space with a welcoming dining area featuring a table paired with a bench and stylish chairs. “A separate seating nook with armchairs offers a perfect spot for coffee,” she says. “Soft decor elements, including an original Lauren Williams (laurenwilliamsart.com) wall hanging, add depth and warmth.”
The inviting space includes counter stools from Brownstone Furniture (brownstonefurniture.com), a banquette, a dining table and chairs from Four Hands, lighting from Visual Comfort and a rug from Jaipur Living (jaipurliving.com).
The kitchen’s breakfast room provides a perfect spot for morning coffee, with comfortble stools from Brownstone Furniture.
PRIMARY SUITE
“We aimed to create a serene and functional space by changing the entire layout, even dry walling in a window to optimize functionality,” says Webb. “Layered textures, including a plush upholstered bed, cozy boucle armchair and brass-accented lighting fixtures add depth and warmth.” The room shines with a bed and dressers from Modern History Home (modernhistoryhome. com), bedside lamps and a bench from Arteriors, bedding from Eastern Accents (easternaccents.com) and a custom Sacco rug.

HOW THE HOME IS LIVING
“Our clients have been thrilled with the transformation,” says Webb. “Overall, the home now serves as a beautiful, comfortable retreat that meets their needs and enhances their daily living experience.”
