William Catlett is a busy man. The actor, writer and producer stars this fall in Charm City Kings, the HBO Max film produced by Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, and he’ll join HBO’s acclaimed Lovecraft Country midseason. Even though the T.C. Williams High School grad and former NCAA basketball player has been in Hollywood for a decade, in his mind, DC is still center court.
Your favorite muse? Well, I come from a line of greats. Artist Elizabeth Catlett is in my bloodline. I believe my muse right now is the life that is within. My work, however, is inspired by many elements. Music is one of those elements. Like hearing the sound of go-go music on a hot summer night may inspire me.
When you return to DC, what's your first stop? Marvin (marvindc.com). I just love that place. It’s a vibe and allows me to reconnect and feel the heartbeat of the city. Although sometimes it’s just breathing the air. It reminds me of growing up in the DMV, and most of the time it’s the strongest reconnection.
Best advice you ever received? Mara Akil told me, ‘Most people don’t stick around long enough to meet their opportunity.’ This amazing woman spoke these words to me when I was in the writers room for Love Is. I knew God spoke to me that day, and I will forever be reminded of that statement.
Last great book you read? The Alchemist
For a dream game of pick-up hoops, who are you running with? I’m long overdue for a game. But if I had to pick, it would be Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Majors.
