Appliances like Samsung’s family hub refrigerator increased in popularity during COVID-19.

COVID-19 didn’t just impact our individual lives and country as a whole, it created a wave of change across a slew of professions, especially the home industry. After months confined to our living quarters, there are more than a few people ready to upgrade their space. We tapped home appliance retailer AJ Madison (ajmadison.com) for five ways the coronavirus is changing home design.

1. Buying Large Appliances Online

Even in these post-quarantine days, it’s easier—not to mention safer—to shop online, even when it comes to bigger items. Buying appliances of this scale without a showroom expert to assist or physically seeing the product can be daunting, so AJ Madison shares a few tips for a successful purchase: Measure the space it’s going into, as well as any tight doorways, stairwells, slanted ceilings or elevators you’ll encounter; and always check the spec sheet.

2. Cooking With Smart Appliances

At-home cooking spiked tremendously during the shelter-in-place order, so investing in top-of-the-line smart appliances increased noticeably. Homeowners now want high-tech ranges, refrigerators and ovens, which can guide them through recipes, reduce food waste, automatically refill essentials and more.

3. Demand for Storage

Because the pandemic changed how customers stock up on fresh and frozen groceries, AJ Madison has noticed a demand for large-capacity fridges and freezers. Customers are seeking larger storage spaces, including modular all-refrigerator and all-freezer columns, which have been a top choice for recent renovations. Under-counter refrigerators with beverage centers and wine coolers have also spiked in demand

4. Entertain at Home

With trips canceled and parties postponed, families have had to find ways to entertain at home. AJ Madison notes a rise in popularity for entertaining-related products, including wine refrigerators, beverage centers, ice makers and even ice cream parlors. AJ Madison recommends adding a wet bar to instantly take your quarantine fete to the next level.

5. Move It Outdoors

With temperatures rising almost as rapidly as our cabin fever, the industry has seen a surge in outdoor living areas. AJ Madison notes that stocking up on outdoor kitchen appliances has never been more relevant, with barbecue grills and pizza ovens among the popular choices for summer renovations. Added bonus: Moving the party outside keeps everyone safer.
