A Chevy Chase family of six renovates their home with an open floor plan and functionality in mind.
Bumping into each other was common for a family of six in their Chevy Chase, Md., home. So, the couple aimed to remodel the rooms and create an addition with the help of Chesapeake Construction (chesapeake-construction.com). Samantha Friedman Interiors (samanthafriedmaninteriors.com) handled the home’s materials and design details.
A built-in adds dimension and storage.
“They wanted to stay true to the historical side of the house but inject their personality and fun,” says Friedman, adding that her team mimicked the lush surroundings outside the home by using greens, blues and many floral and avian prints.
Built-in bookshelves and storage add to the living room’s functionality.
KITCHEN
“There wasn’t room for a kitchen table, so seating at the island for six was important without comprising functionality,” says Friedman, who opted for an induction cooktop to save space. “We used neutrals to ground everything, with great pops of color on the lights, counters and pillows.”

Standout elements include lighting from Cedar and Moss (cedarandmoss. com), quartzite Maldives counters from Marble Systems (marblesystems.com), drapery from Yardstick Interiors (yardstickdesign.info) and cushions and pillows from Richman Designs (richmandesignfurnitureservices.com) with fabric by Rue Four (@rue_four). Kravet (kravet.com) fabric covers the counter stools by Jessica Charles (jessicacharles.com) that surround the island.
The living room features a sectional from Kravet and coffee table from Tritter Feefer.
LIVING ROOM
“The house is historic, so we wanted the design to be timeless and clean but fun and not fussy,” says Friedman. “The furniture lines are mainly traditional in design, but we added some clean edges on ottomans and stools to modernize the space.” Standout pieces include a custom sectional from Kravet, a cocktail table from Tritter Feefer (tritterfeefer.com), drapery from Yardstick Interiors and ottoman and pillow fabrics from Cowtan & Tout (cowtan.com), Ericka M. Powell Textiles (erikampowelltextiles.com) and Samuel & Sons (samuelandsons.com). Carpeting from Carpet Creations & Flooring (carpetcreationsandflooring.com) lines the room.
