Bethesda homeowners transform their property, adding light and functionality. The team from Tabor Design Build added light and functionality to this Bethesda home.
We recently sat down with John Tabor, the president of Rockville-based Tabor Design Build, Inc. (tabordesignbuild.com), to chat about a renovation that helped a family live more efficiently with infinitely better aesthetics.
The home, including the living room, now boasts much better flow and gathering spaces for family and friends on game days.
What was the scope of the project?
Our clients were frustrated with their cramped house, which needed better traffic flow and bottlenecks around passageways. The existing home was disjointed between the original house and the rear addition, and the dark rear family room addition wasn’t big enough to accommodate friends on game days.
The second story was too hot in the summer as the house only had one HVAC system serving both floors. There was no mudroom at the front entrance, and the winding staircase was dangerous and needed to meet the current code.
The home’s entry.
How did you solve these issues?
We replaced part of the bearing walls between the original home and the family room with upset beams above the ceiling to open the rooms to each other. We extended the rear addition approximately 4 feet into the backyard and opened the rear wall with a 12-foot-wide Pella (pella.com) converging sliding door to add light.
We built a front addition for a mudroom and reused some of the existing brick to tie the new addition seamlessly into the existing home. To enlarge the openings between the original house and the addition, we removed the ductwork to the second floor and installed another HVAC system to serve the second floor. We replaced the dangerous winding stairway with a new custom stairway up to code. We also moved the laundry room at the top of the stairs to make room for the new stairway. Our homeowners love their gorgeous new space.
A mudroom adds functionality and storage to the renovated home.
How would you describe your process for working with clients?
Through our exclusive 3D design process, we help our clients envision their projects by creating lifelike 3D renderings on a 52-inch screen in our conference room. We then generate construction plans from our 3D renderings and build their project to look like they imagined.
