The largest city park in DC doubles the size of Central Park. Rock Creek Park encompasses over 1,700 acres to connect the northwest quadrant of the city with gravel and paved trails. Lace up your hiking boots and trek the trails to discover mills, cabins, statues, and stunning nature views.
The nine trails at Harpers Ferry make for leisure 15-minute hikes or strenuous Appalachian Trail hikes, which can take over four hours. Views of the Potomac River are well worth the effort and physical stamina. Admire valleys, geologic formations and water attractions with the many hiking routes at Harpers Ferry.
Roughly over an hour south of The District, the Shenandoah National Park is a great day-trip destination. Hikers and nature enthusiasts of all fitness levels enjoy the waterfalls, viewpoints and historic sites throughout the 200,000 acres of Shenandoah National Park. Intermediate hikers appreciate the waterfalls of the Whiteoak Canyon trail, just over seven miles long. Old Rag Trail is more of a challenge and suitable for advanced hikers looking to marvel at sweeping treetop views. For weekenders, lodges are available within the park, including Skyland and Big Meadows.
Just 15 minutes outside the city, Great Falls Park is suitable for pets to join the adventure. Load up the kayaks or rent nearby to explore the Potomac River. Exhilarating water excursions and easygoing trailheads are abundant for various outdoor activities at Great Falls Park.
Over 500 plant species inhabit Sugarloaf Mountain mountain. Wildlife is bountiful with white-tailed deer, red foxes, cottontail rabbits, flying squirrels, wild turkeys, songbirds, horned owls and more. Beginner, intermediate, moderate and advanced trails offer hikers stunning nature views.
