Get To Know DC's JRINK Founder Shizu Okusa With These Five Intriguing Questions

Kristen Schott Kristen Schott | May 1, 2019 | People

Shizu Okusa, founder of Wellthy & Co., quenched our thirst with JRINK’s (jrink.‌com) cold-pressed elixirs. Then she filled a need with Apothékary (apothekary.co), her so-called “Farmacy of the Future.” “Juice can’t solve everything, like insomnia,” says the yogi and former Goldman Sachs executive. The 50-plus ayurveda-backed herbs and superfoods (think Slay All Day) will soon be sold nationwide and in her new Farmacy in Adams Morgan. How’s that for herb appeal?

ONE

Tell me your favorite yoga pose.
I’m 100 percent vata, meaning that I am a dreamer... often with my mind in the air. To balance, I need more grounding exercises and food. So, naturally, any yoga poses like chaturanga or plank work best. But nothing beats a good corpse or shavasana pose—at the end, I’ve learned to surrender to things bigger than myself.

TWO

Which wellness guru, living or dead, would you like to host for dinner?
As a newly certified reiki Level 1 healer, I’d love to meet Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder of reiki (aka energy healing). … I’d love to get his perspective on why and how we can better cope with our modern-day stressors using energy.

THREE

What’s the last thing you ate?
Ironically, it was a slice of chocolate cake at a friend’s party. The last thing I ‘jrank’ was our celery juice, aka Heal Me Up. This is what balance should look like, ammirite?

FOUR

If you could be a cocktail, what would you be?
An Old-Fashioned: Age is a wonderful thing, and life tastes better with years in the making.

FIVE

Name the one place you’d like to be right now.
Ryōan-ji, a Japanese rock garden and Buddhist temple in Kyoto. My dad was a Japanese garden landscaper, and after living a year in Mozambique, I took a few months to ‘recalibrate’ in Japan. ... Ryōan-ji is one of the first examples of kare-sansui, or dry landscape, a supersimple form of gardening using rocks with linear raked patterns. It’s beautifully minimalistic.
