What a year. For anyone seeking peace, we give you five reasons to get outside during the chilly months ahead. These tranquil walks through stunning scenery will let you clear your mind, watch for wildlife and get some great exercise. Happy trekking!

Theodore Roosevelt Island

In the 1930s, the island was transformed from neglected, overgrown farmland into a remarkable memorial to America’s 26th president. To visit the memorial plaza—which features the Theodore Roosevelt statue and fountains—the Woods Trail is the way to go. If nature interests you more than history, the 1.5-mile Swamp Trail will take you through striking woods and a cattail marsh. 700 George Washington Memorial Parkway, McLean, Va., 703.289.2500

Great Falls National Park

Let your mind wander as you listen to the calming sounds of the Potomac River. As you stroll through the 800-acre park, stop by each of the three outlooks for views of the awe-inspiring waterfalls. 700 George Washington Memorial Parkway, McLean, Va., 703.757.3101

Mason Neck State Park

For your best chance to get a glimpse of the American bald eagle, walk along the Bay View Trail at Mason Neck State Park. The one-mile loop weaves in and out of tidal marshes and provides unlimited opportunities to see captivating wildlife, like great blue herons, ospreys, frogs and turtles. 7301 High Point Road, Lorton, Va., 703.339.2385

Mount Vernon Trail

For a breathtaking view of the DC skyline, head to Mount Vernon Trail. As you walk along the 18-miles of paved trails, stop by George Washington’s home or Old Town Alexandria for a dose of history. 700 George Washington Memorial Parkway, McLean, Va., 703.289.2500

White Oak Canyon

Road trip! This amazing trek, with a trailhead off of Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah National Park, is a summer and fall favorite. But winter is a best-kept secret here. There are no crowds, of course, and the bare trees reveal Mother Nature’s gorgeous work, including magnificent waterfalls—sometimes frozen during the chilly months. 17157 Skyline Dr., Front Royal, Va., 540.999.3500
